Suikoden Walkthrough - Your Ultimate Guide to 108 Stars, Achievements & Hidden Secrets

The Suikoden Walkthrough you’ve been waiting for is here! With the newly remastered version, one of the most exciting challenges is recruiting all 108 Stars of Destiny. If you’re aiming for a 100% completion run and unlocking every achievement, this guide has you covered.

Designed for players who prefer a concise, bullet-point format, this walkthrough ensures you won’t miss any key items, hidden treasures, or recruitable characters. No need to sift through lengthy paragraphs—just follow along and stay on track.

While Suikoden is a relatively short and straightforward RPG, it offers plenty of flexibility when building your battle team. Experienced players should find the main story manageable, as most dungeons follow a linear path. However, certain areas present unique challenges—don’t worry, we’ll guide you through every tricky spot!

What This Suikoden Walkthrough Will Cover

  • A minimalist step-by-step guide, ensuring you always know what to do next.
  • Clear indications of recruitable characters and missable content, helping you achieve 100% completion.
  • A mostly spoiler-free experience, with only essential warnings like “this character will leave soon” to assist with item management.

What This Walkthrough Will Not Include

  • In-depth boss strategies or party-building recommendations.
  • Detailed dungeon maps—you’ll get basic directions to locate key items, but most areas in Suikoden are straightforward.

Follow this guide to experience Suikoden at its best, without missing crucial content!

Opening

Gregminster Royal Palace

After entering your character’s name (we’ll refer to him as Tir, his canonical name), you’ll find yourself on the second floor of Gregminster Royal Palace. Take some time to explore the menus and familiarize yourself with the controls. You can chat with NPCs around the area, but when you’re ready to proceed, speak to the NPC standing nearby—this is Teo, your character’s father.

Early Purchase Bonus

If you have the early purchase bonus for the Suikoden Remasters, you will start with the following items:

  • 57,300 Potch (currency)
  • Fortune Orb ×1
  • Prosperity Orb ×1

The Fortune Orb can be attached to a character at any Rune Shop, transforming it into a Fortune Rune, which doubles that character’s EXP gain. Similarly, the Prosperity Orb becomes a Prosperity Rune when attached, doubling Potch earned after battles. Rune Shops are marked with a circular symbol on store signs. Additional runes can be acquired during normal gameplay, but this bonus provides a strong early advantage. However, note that you cannot attach runes to Tir at the beginning of the game.

Tip: If you’re aiming to collect all achievements, be sure to start on Hard mode, as there is an achievement tied to completing the game on this difficulty.

Gregminster Exploration

After the conversation with Teo, head downstairs to the first floor and speak with Kraze on the left side. Then, talk to Teo once more. Before leaving the palace, check the suit of armor on the far right side to obtain 100 Potch.

Once you step outside, you’ll be automatically taken to the McDohl household. Instead of exploring your home right away, head back into Gregminster to familiarize yourself with the city.

Key Locations in Gregminster

  • Inns (Bed icon) – Used for saving your game. The inn in Gregminster is free.
  • Item Shops (Potion icon) – Sell consumables such as medicine.
  • Armor Shops (Armor icon) – Provide protective gear for your characters.
  • Appraisal Shops (Magnifying glass icon) – Identify unknown items.

Tip: Always check the inventory of every item and armor shop you visit. Later in the game, you’ll have the ability to buy items from any previously visited shop, but only if you’ve checked their stock at least once.

Bonus Exploration Opportunity

Before exploring your home, you can take advantage of an early-game bonus. If you venture into the world before recruiting Gremio, Pahn, and Cleo, you can acquire an extra Fortune Orb or Prosperity Orb (but not both).

  • To obtain a second Fortune Orb – Explore the world with only Tir in your party.
  • To obtain a second Prosperity Orb – Recruit Ted at the McDohl household before venturing out.

Since the Prosperity Orb’s effect is less useful early on, obtaining another Fortune Orb is the better choice. This guide assumes you will take this opportunity.

World Map – Gregminster Region

Unlike many classic RPGs, Suikoden does not feature a bestiary, so there’s no need to track every enemy type. However, wandering alone can be dangerous. Fight Fuzzballs in the area to gain early experience, and upgrade your weapon and armor as soon as possible. With Tir alone, you should reach level 9 or 10 after a few battles.

Nearby Towns

  • Rockland (East of Gregminster) – Home to Marco, who runs a cup-shuffling minigame. You can bet money to win Potch, though higher bets make winning much harder.
  • Lenankamp (South of Gregminster) – Features a Blacksmith (Hammer icon), where you can upgrade weapons. Unlike traditional RPGs, weapon upgrades in Suikoden are permanent and require Potch instead of new equipment. This blacksmith can improve weapons up to rank 5.

Tip: Buy armor upgrades in Lenankamp before proceeding.

Once you’ve reached level 9 or 10 and upgraded your gear, travel west of Gregminster to Mt. Tigerwolf.

Mt. Tigerwolf

Inventory Warning: In Suikoden, your inventory space is limited to what your characters can carry. With only Tir in your party, space is extremely restricted. Consider skipping treasure chests for now and returning later with a full party.

Follow the straightforward path, skipping treasure chests for now. You will pass a locked bar building before reaching the exit.

Sarady (Secret Town)

You will arrive at Sarady, a small hidden town.

  • Item Shop – Sells a Water Orb, which can be attached to form a Water Rune (useful for healing). Consider purchasing one.
  • Bonus Rune – Speak with the NPC in the upper-right house:
    • If Tir is alone, you will receive another Fortune Orb.
    • If you recruited Ted, you will receive a Prosperity Orb.

This is the main reason for visiting Sarady early. Once finished, return to Gregminster on foot.

Advancing the Story

Back in Gregminster, enter your house for a series of cutscenes. You will automatically recruit your first Stars of Destiny:

  • Gremio (Automatic)
  • Cleo (Automatic)
  • Pahn (Automatic)
  • Ted (Automatic)

At this point, you can save the game in Tir’s room. Before continuing, consider training your new party, upgrading weapons and armor in Lenankamp, and attaching any Runes you’ve acquired.

Tip: You can buy Winged Boots in Gregminster for Cleo (or any female character). Though expensive, they remain useful throughout the entire game.

Now, revisit Mt. Tigerwolf to collect the items you skipped earlier.

Mt. Tigerwolf – Item Collection

  • Circlet
  • Medicine ×2
  • Gloves
  • Wind Rune Piece
  • Antique (Octopus Urn, must be appraised)
  • Clone Orb
  • 1,000 Potch

Returning to Gregminster

Once ready, report to Kraze on the first floor of Gregminster Castle to receive your next mission.

Magician’s Island

Speak with Futch, the dragon-rider on the east side of the castle, to travel to Magician’s Island.

This area is completely linear, containing only two treasure chests:

  • Medicine (hidden on the left side of the path)
  • Fur Robe

At the end of the path, you’ll face your first boss, the Clay Doll. If you have prepared by upgrading weapons and armor in Gregminster, this fight should be easy.

After defeating the boss, continue along the path to meet Leknaat and Luc. During the cutscenes, you will receive:

  • Astral Predictions (key item)
  • Fire Orb (can be attached as a Rune)

Following these events, you will be sent back to Gregminster.

Preparing for the Next Mission

Once you’re back in Gregminster, report to Kraze on the first floor of the castle. You will receive your next assignment: travel to Rockland.

Missable Item Alert: Around Gregminster, Furballs have a 0.26% chance to drop a Celadon Pot, a collectible Antique item. This item serves no real purpose but can be displayed later. If you’re a completionist, now is the time to farm for it.

On the run, Rockland Mt. Seifu

Rockland

Head to the large building in the north for a scene. You’ll be assigned a mission to travel to Mt. Seifu, located east of Rockland. Note that the chest you see here is currently inaccessible.

Before leaving, make sure to buy at least one Escape Talisman—these allow you to exit dungeons quickly.

Additionally, always check shops in every new location. Eventually, you’ll unlock access to a shop that sells all previously visited items, but only if you’ve visited each shop at least once.

Mt. Seifu

This dungeon, like most in Suikoden, follows a relatively linear path. When you reach a five-way split, take the center north path last, as it leads forward. Explore the dead ends first for treasures.

Items in Mt. Seifu:

  • Boots
  • Medicine
  • Antique (??? Urn - Flower Vase)
  • 1000 Potch
  • PROT Rune Piece – A consumable that increases a character’s Protection stat. Tir is a good candidate for this.
  • Medicine
  • Escape Talisman
  • Greaves
  • Lightning Rune Piece

Boss: Queen Ant

  • Strategy: Simply defend for three turns; this battle is unwinnable.
  • After the battle, Ted will handle the situation in a cutscene.

At the top of the mountain, you’ll face an event battle against bandits, followed by a boss fight that you can win.

Boss: Varkas & Sydonia

  • Strategy: Focus on defeating Sydonia first, as he has lower HP.
  • Healing: Use Medicine when necessary.
  • After the battle, you’ll automatically return to Rockland.

Rockland (Return)

Before proceeding, remove all items from Ted, as he will leave the party soon. You can also sell his equipment if you want extra Potch.

Additionally, consider stripping Pahn’s equipment, as he will also leave temporarily but will return later.

Next Steps:

  1. Approach the new sprites in the northeast of Rockland and choose to Fight for an event battle.
  2. Enter the northern house for a scene (the chest inside is still inaccessible).
  3. Travel back to Gregminster.

Gregminster

A series of story events will take place here. There are no missable items, so just progress through the events normally.

  • After Ted leaves the party, head to McDohl’s house.
  • During the events at McDohl’s house, talk to your party members repeatedly to progress.
  • Eventually, you’ll receive the Soul Eater Rune and be transported outside.

Next Steps:

  1. Go to the Inn and talk to Cleo and Gremio.
  2. Try to leave the Inn to trigger an event with Viktor.
  3. Follow Viktor north and talk to him.
  4. Head to the city entrance for more scenes.
  5. You will automatically be transported outside Gregminster.
  6. Travel to Lenankamp.

Lenankamp

Before moving forward:

  • Place Viktor in the front row and Cleo in the back.
  • Viktor is a short-range (S) fighter and will be ineffective in the rear.

Steps:

  1. Stay at the Inn to proceed.
  2. Talk to the NPC behind the clock when they appear.
  3. After more scenes, attempt to leave through the north exit.
  4. Talk to the NPC on the ground and admit fault when given the choice.
  5. Head back to Rockland.

Before leaving:

  • Adjust your party lineup.
  • Upgrade Viktor’s weapon and improve his equipment.

Rockland (Mini-Dungeon)

  1. Talk to the guard at the north building’s door for a scene.
  2. Enter through the front door and fight the event battle.
  3. Open the chest (finally!) to obtain Medicine.
  4. Continue left through the house and collect:
    • Chest Plate
    • Antique (appraise it to identify as Hex Doll)
    • 700 Potch
    • 1000 Potch
  5. Talk to Varkas for an event.
  6. Head back to Rockland’s entrance to trigger more story events.

Return to Lenankamp

Lenankamp (Liberation Hideout)

  1. Enter the Inn and go through the clock.
  2. Speak with Odessa for cutscenes—she will join the party.
    • Place Odessa in the back row.
    • Do not invest in her equipment; she will only be in the team for a short time.

Travel to Sarady via Mt. Tigerwolf

  • Midway through the path, you’ll encounter a building where you can stay for free to heal.

Sarady

  1. Enter the building near the entrance (Inn) and stay overnight for a cutscene.
  2. Return to Lenankamp.

Odessa will soon leave the party, so make sure she isn’t holding any important items.

Lenankamp (Final Tasks)

  1. Go to the Inn to start another event chain.
  2. Return to the Liberation Hideout for two event battles.
  3. Head south for a third event battle.
  4. Talk to Odessa.

Next Destination: Fortress Kwaba

  • Location: South-Southwest (SSW) of Lenankamp.

Fortress Kwaba

  1. When prompted for a name, choose anything (e.g., Schtoltheim Reinbach IV).
  2. Head south through the fortress for more story scenes.
  3. Speak with Chandler at the southern exit (he is not functional yet).

Next Steps:

  • The enemies in the next world map section are stronger.
  • Try to reach Seika, located directly south.

The Liberation Army

The Liberation Army

Seika

Talk to Mathiu near the middle building, then follow him to his house in the northeast. He won’t reveal much, but return to the main city for another scene.

Head back to Mathiu’s house and choose to intervene in the event battle. After the fight, talk to Mathiu again.

Now, head to Kaku, which is located southwest of Seika.

Kaku

You can buy better armor here, but the blacksmith can only upgrade weapons up to Rank 5.

If you need even better armor, consider traveling south to Kouan.

Go to the bar on the southern side of the city. After a short event, Camille will join your party.

Note: If you’re tracking the Stars of Destiny, don’t worry—I will start numbering them once we get our own castle.

Talk to Tai Ho in the basement and beat him at his dice game to proceed. After winning, he will move to the harbor.

At the harbor, talk to Tai Ho again to travel to a one-time-only area: Castle of Toran.

Castle of Toran

Tai Ho will join your party here. If needed, speak with Yam Koo to return to Kaku for equipment upgrades.

Prepare for a major boss battle in this dungeon. It can be tough, especially on Hard Mode. Equip someone (Cleo is a good choice) with a Fire Orb and stock up on medicine.

Tip: The Clone Orb works well on Viktor, though it causes him to stagger every other turn. Use medicine to heal him as needed.

Recommended level: 17+.

One-Time-Only Items

Make sure to collect these before leaving:

  • Mega Medicine
  • Toe Shoes
  • Antitoxin
  • 2000 Potch
  • STR Rune Piece
  • Pointy Hat
  • Medicine
  • Antitoxin
  • Wind Orb (Through an invisible opening in the west wall, near the north chest)
  • Haziness Orb (Through an invisible opening in the north wall, near the south chest)

Boss: Zombie Dragon

  • Weak to Fire.
  • Have a water rune user or plenty of medicine for healing.
  • Cleo should use Fire Orb attacks.
  • Viktor should alternate between Clone Rune attacks and healing.

After the battle, you will get to name your castle. The official name is Toran.

Speak with Luc to check your recruited Stars of Destiny so far:

After meeting Lepant, follow him inside the building.

Inside, Lepant will force his way into your party. You will fight six soldiers in an event battle.

  • Winning can double or triple your earnings.
  • Save at the Inn before playing to reload if you lose.
  • Use this method to afford weapon upgrades and armor.

Continuing the Story

Now that we have recruited more members, head to Great Forest Village (southeast of Kaku).

Suggested Party:

  • Pahn
  • Cleo
  • Luc

Upgrade their equipment in Kouan before proceeding.

Great Forest Village

After upgrading your HQ to Level 2, it’s time to head southeast to Great Forest Village.

  • You may want to bring Pahn, Cleo, and Luc in your party for the upcoming battles.
  • Upgrade your weapons and armor in Kouan before proceeding.

When you arrive at Great Forest Village, you’ll encounter a scene with Kirkis, an elf who seeks help. He’ll join your party (31/108).

  • After the scene, follow Kirkis to the Elf Village through the Great Forest Path.

Great Forest Path

This is a straightforward dungeon with some random encounters.

  • Pick up Mega Medicine and Needle along the way.
  • Enemies here are relatively easy, but you may want to level up Kirkis a bit.
  • At the end of the path, you’ll reach Elf Village.

Elf Village

Upon arrival, you’ll be taken to see the elf leader. Unfortunately, the elves do not trust humans and imprison you.

Getting Out

  • Valeria, an imperial general who disagrees with her orders, will help you escape.
  • She will also join your party (32/108).
  • Return to Great Forest Village, but the village will be burned down.

With no place left to go, you’ll need to visit the Kobold Village to seek assistance.

Kobold Village

  • The Kobolds are also suffering from the Empire’s tyranny.
  • You’ll meet Kuromimi, a Kobold warrior.
  • Kwanda Rosman, one of the Empire’s generals, has been controlling the Kobolds with a strange device.
  • The Kobolds’ water supply is poisoned, making many sick.

Recruiting More Allies

  • Speak with Chapman in the armor shop to recruit him (33/108).
  • You can also recruit Jeane in the Rune Shop (34/108).
  • If you brought Valeria, you can recruit Stallion as well (35/108).

Preparing for the Battle

You’ll now need to attack Pannu Yakuta, Kwanda Rosman’s stronghold.

  • Make sure your party is well-equipped.
  • Bring Cleo with Fire Magic and Luc with Wind Magic for better damage output.

Pannu Yakuta Castle

This is the first large-scale battle in the game.

Army Battle: Liberation Army vs. Kwanda’s Forces

  • Formation Tips:
    • Use Magic Attacks if you recruited Luc.
    • Charge if you have a strong unit.
    • If Kwanda’s army uses Bow Attack, counter with Magic.

Once you win the battle, you will storm Pannu Yakuta Castle.

Pannu Yakuta Dungeon

  • Enemies here are tougher than before, so stock up on healing items.
  • Key Items to Collect:
    • Wind Rune Piece
    • Resurrection Rune
    • 8000 Potch
    • Master Robe

Boss: Kwanda Rosman

  • Kwanda will challenge you to a one-on-one duel.
  • Duel Strategy:
    • Observe his speech to determine his next move.
    • If he says something aggressive, he will Attack – use Defend.
    • If he seems defensive, he will Defend – use Attack.
    • If he prepares for a big move, use Wild Attack.

After defeating Kwanda, you will have the choice to spare or execute him.

  • If you spare Kwanda, he will join your army (36/108).
  • If you execute him, you won’t get him as a recruit.

With Pannu Yakuta conquered, your army grows, and your HQ upgrades again!

Returning to HQ

  • Back at the HQ, more rooms and shops will open.
  • Your army is now recognized as a serious threat to the Empire.
  • Mathiu will outline the next major battle plan.

With Kwanda Rosman defeated, your next target is Teo McDohl, the protagonist’s father.

Before continuing the main story, take some time to recruit more Stars of Destiny, upgrade your weapons, and prepare for future battles.

Elves, Dwarves, and Kobolds

Great Forest Village

After the scene, exit to the east. Like most dungeons, the Great Forest is relatively linear with a few dead ends branching off the main path.

  • Shortly after entering the Great Forest, you will recruit Viki (31/108). Viki comes with the Blinking Rune, which allows you to teleport from your HQ to previously visited locations. Eventually, you will unlock the ability to warp back to HQ, but this will take some time.
  • One screen east of Viki, you’ll find a Gauntlet.
  • South and east of Viki is an Escape Talisman.
  • Continue onward to find Needle, a Water Rune Piece (slightly hidden to the south), and an LCK Rune Piece.
  • Eventually, you’ll enter Kobold Village. There’s a brief scene here, but continue moving forward when possible.

Once back on the world map, head south to the Village of the Elves.

Village of the Elves

  • Head up the ladder to trigger a scene.
  • Before shopping, go north and speak to the Elven Elder for another scene. You’ll end up in prison.
  • After the prison scenes, leave the village. Soon, Valeria will temporarily join your party. Feel free to swap out whoever you don’t need.
  • Valeria’s Falcon Rune is great for consistent damage and should be used every turn. It can be used from either row.
  • Now, purchase equipment from the shops and head to Dwarf Trail, located slightly northeast of the Village of the Elves.

Dwarf Trail

  • You’ll witness a short scene near the end of the path, but otherwise, this is another straightforward dungeon.
    • Feather
    • Martial Arts Robe
    • Sacrificial Buddha (found at the first fork on the left).
    • Continue onward…
    • Guard Robe (left ladder)
    • Killer Orb (hidden right of the right ladder)
    • Medicine
    • LCK Rune Piece

Head northeast to the Village of the Dwarves.

Village of the Dwarves

  • You can strengthen weapons up to Level 9 here, so make sure to upgrade your physical attackers’ gear. Also, upgrade your armor.
  • If you need money, you can easily earn some by working with Gaspar.
  • At this point, it’s a good idea to level up Pahn’s equipment, as he will soon need to win a one-on-one battle.
  • Speak to Meese in the Blacksmith. He will join as long as you’ve recruited Maas in the Great Forest Village (32/108).
  • Speak to the Dwarf Chieftain in the upper-right house and accept his challenge.
  • Head to the Dwarves’ Vault, located north of the village.

Dwarves’ Vault

This dungeon is slightly more intricate than others in the game. Follow the path to the first switch room.

  • In the first switch room: press the right switch, then the center switch, and pick up the Sunbeam Orb.
  • Now press the leftmost switch, then the rightmost switch twice. Proceed past the room.
  • When you reach the maze-like room, grab the Medicine, Magic Robe, and Blue Ribbon. Exit to the northeast.
  • In the platform room, take the far-right platform, then the left platform, and go south. Pick up the Lightning Rune Piece. Go back two platforms, then head south to the exit.
  • In the next maze-like room, grab the Pointy Hat, DEX Rune Piece, and Medicine.
  • In the light puzzle room, press the buttons in this order: Left, Right, Right, Left, Left, Left, Right, Right.
  • At the 4-way intersection, grab Mega Medicine to the left and 5000 Potch to the right. Then continue north.
  • At the next intersection, head southwest to find an Escape Talisman. Then head down the stairs.

Boss: Gigantes

  • Weak to wind, immune to fire. Upgrading your weapons to Level 9 will significantly increase your damage output.

At the 3-way fork, head left for a PROT Rune Piece. Continue down the center path to find the Flowing Water Cane. You can use the Escape Talisman to leave quickly after the boss.

Village of the Dwarves (Continued)

  • Speak to the Dwarf Chieftain for a scene. Afterward, head back to the Village of the Elves via the Dwarf Trail.
  • You’ll see a small scene along the Dwarf Trail. Continue to the Village of the Elves.

Village of the Elves (Continued)

  • Before heading to the burning Elven Village, you may want to recruit Lorelei in Kouan, if you haven’t already. Tir must be level 25, which you should be by now (33/108).
  • Enter the Village of the Elves for a scene. Leave and immediately re-enter. Speak with Templeton to recruit him (34/108).
  • With Templeton recruited, you can now press the left face-button for a map.
  • Head to the Village of the Kobolds when ready.

Village of the Kobolds

  • Valeria will leave your party temporarily, but Kuromimi will join.
  • After a battle event, you’ll face your first War Battle in Suikoden.

Battle at Pannu Yakuta Castle

  • War Battles in Suikoden are essentially Rock-Paper-Scissors: Charge > Bow, Bow > Magic, Magic > Charge.
  • If a character dies in a War Battle, you’ll get a clear message. If a character retreats, they may still be okay. Check the Stone Tablet back at base if unsure.
  • For this battle, use Luc’s magic in Round One to counter Kwanda’s Attack, then use Thieves to predict enemy actions. Afterward, proceed with your party.

Pannu Yakuta Castle

  • The right-hand door leads to an Inn you can use for free.
  • This is a relatively short dungeon. Here are the items to look for:
    • Iron Shield (left door)
    • Half Armor (northwest of center door)
    • Gauntlet (east side of 1F)
    • Medicine (2F, northwest room)
    • Old Book Vol. 1 (2F, northeast room)
    • Gale Orb (2F, southeast room)
    • Lightning Rune Piece (2F, southwest room, southern door)

Head up to the 3rd floor to fight the next boss.

Boss: Dragon

  • Weak to Wind.

After the battle, you might want to leave and save at the Village of the Elves, though it’s quite a walk. Be ready to make an important dialogue choice.

Duel: Kwanda

  • Duels follow the same Rock-Paper-Scissors mechanics: Attack > Defend, Defend > Special, Special > Attack.

Kwanda’s dialogue and actions vary, and here’s a reference for what he may do during the duel:

  • Kwanda will Attack:

    • “Taste the sharpness of my blade!”
    • “Well done. But can you take this?”
    • “Heh, now it’s my turn.”
  • Kwanda will Defend:

    • “Can you break my invulnerable defenses?”
    • “Pretty good. How about another one?”
    • “Damn! My turn!”
  • Kwanda will use a Special Attack:

    • “Victory is near! I strike with all my might!”
    • “The next one won’t be so easy!”

After you win, talk to Kwanda and select “Something’s wrong here” and “I want you to join us.” Kwanda, Sylvina, and Stallion will join your army, along with Valeria and Kuromimi permanently. That’s 39/108 Stars of Destiny!

When prompted, select “Not Yet. I have some unfinished business.” Place Kuromimi in your party for recruitment purposes.

Recruitments after the Elven Storyline

  • Village of the Kobold: Speak to Fu Su Lu at the inn. Pay 10,000 potch, and he will join (40/108).
  • Village of the Kobold: Speak to Gon in the southern house; he will join if you have Kuromimi in your party (41/108).
  • If you haven’t recruited Lorelei in Kouan yet, do so now.
  • Speak to Apple at the northeastern house (Mathiu’s) in Seika to recruit her (42/108).

Scarleticia

Headquarters

Head to the meeting room for a scene. Although it’s not explicitly stated, Humphrey has joined your party (43/108). Sanchez also “joins,” but he is not a Star of Destiny, though he can change your party lineup.

Head to Kaku and talk to Flik in the SW building. Then, return to HQ and speak with Flik in the meeting room, and he will join your party (44/108). You will soon begin the next War Battle.

Battle at the Fortress of Garan

Remember: Magic > Charge, Charge > Bow, Bow > Magic.

Use your “Other” skills. Thieves can predict enemy movements, and Mathiu can power up your Charge attacks.

Battle at Scarleticia Castle

You cannot win this battle. After the scene, choose your party and head to the nearest town to the west, Teien. It is recommended to have Pahn in your party.

Teien

As usual, check the shops, sharpen weapons, and equip your characters. The blacksmith here can raise weapons to level 12.

Talk to Hellion in the Inn to recruit her (45/108). Pick up the chest for the Blinking Rune and Mega Medicine. With this, your HQ will reach level 3.

The Blinking Rune allows you to warp to HQ from anywhere, and combined with Viki, you can warp anywhere on the world map at any time. Note that the Blinking Mirror can only be used on the World Map.

Make sure to warp back to HQ, exit, and re-enter to trigger a small scene confirming that you’ve reached HQ Level 3. Then, use Viki to return to Teien.

Buy Yellow Flower Seeds and Yellow Paint, and store them in your HQ. These items are needed for a future recruitment and an achievement later.

Rikon

Rikon is located south of Teien. Here, buy Blue Flower Seeds and Blue Paint, and store them in your HQ.

Talk to Lotte upstairs in the Inn. You need to find a cat in Kaku, near the Inn. After returning, Lotte will join your party (46/108).

Talk to Jabba in the Appraisal Shop. To recruit him, you must get a random drop Nameless Urn from Holly Masters on the world map. Show the Urn to Jabba, and he will join your party (47/108), adding an Appraise shop to HQ.

Antei

Antei is located west of Teien. Talk to Chapman inside the Armor Shop to recruit him (48/108), adding an Armor Shop to HQ.

Speak to Jeane in the Rune Shop to recruit her (49/108), adding a Rune Shop to HQ.

Buy Toe Shoes from the Armor Shop and equip them on Tir. Talk to Mina in the Inn and agree to dance with her to recruit her (50/108).

Rikon

Board the boat here and head south down the river. Keep going until you hit a whirlpool. Since you cannot pass it, use the Blinking Mirror to return to headquarters. A scene will trigger.

Afterwards, teleport to Teien.

Teien

Talk to Gen in the unlocked NE house to recruit him (51/108). Head next door to talk to Kamandol, and he will join after the scene (52/108).

Return to Rikon

Rikon / Liukan’s Hermitage

A scene will automatically play. After resting in the inn, return to the docks for another scene. Head back down the river, just past the rapids, to Liukan’s Hermitage. Speak to Liukan for a scene.

Before leaving, pick up Black Paint from inside the house.

Use the Blinking Mirror to return to HQ.

Headquarters

Talk to Mathiu (who should be on the 4th floor if your HQ is level 3) for a scene. He will give you Mathiu’s Letter.

Head to Antei.

Antei

Talk to Kimberly in the house behind the inn. She will join your party (53/108).

Talk to Tesla in the house behind Kimberly’s. He will join your party (54/108).

Return to HQ

Talk to Mathiu on the top floor to get Fake Orders.

At this time, you can remove Gen and Kamandol from your party by talking to Sanchez. Add whoever you want in their place.

Head to Soniere Prison, SW of Rikon.

Soniere

This is a small dungeon area. Be sure to get an Opal drop from Nightmares, as you’ll need this for a future recruitment.

Make sure to kill the Nightmare first, as it has a better chance of dropping the Opal.

With the Fake Orders, you can enter the front door.

Items

  • Silver Collar (south of the Save orb)
  • Old Book Vol. 6
  • Antitoxin

There will be a few fixed battles with guards.

After meeting Liukan

Work your way back out of the prison. A long scene will play, and then head to HQ.

Headquarters

Talk to Mathiu. Liukan will formally join your party (55/108).

If needed, you can retrieve Gremio’s items from your warehouse.

Head to Antei

Give Esmeralda an Opal in the Inn to recruit her (56/108).

When ready, talk to Mathiu to start the next War Battle.

The Second Battle at Scarleticia Castle

Remember: Magic > Charge, Charge > Bow, Bow > Magic.

Scarleticia Castle

  • Grab Red Paint from the left-most door and Magic Robe from the right-most door.
  • Examine the portrait in the NW section of the first floor. Select “I actually kind of like his style…”. You’ll get Window Set 1 and MAG Rune Piece from the secret floor.

Head to the second floor.

  • Grab the Spark Orb from the SW room. Continue south for a scene.

Select “This man is innocent” and “Very well.” Milich will join (57/108). You will automatically return to HQ.

Headquarters / Recruitment

Talk to Sanchez and add Milich to your party. Return to Scarleticia Castle to recruit Ivanov from 1F (58/108) and Kasios from 2F (59/108).

Head to Antei and speak with Qlon near the entrance. He will join your party (60/108).

Recruiting Pirates

To recruit three pirates, you need to defeat a tough battle. Make sure you have Yam Koo and Tai Ho in your party. Strengthen their weapons, as Tai Ho will be required later.

You can buy Killer Orbs in Teien to improve their crit chance, or you can buy Turtle Orbs in the Village of the Dwarves to allow their Unite attack every turn.

Prepare your strongest team and head to Teien. Get in the boat and head to the island to the NW. Defeat Anji, Kanak, and Leonardo in three rounds to recruit them (63/108).

A Fated Encounter

Headquarters

Before proceeding with the next steps, ensure that Pahn is at least level 30, equipped with strong gear, and has a sharpened weapon.

Once you’re at HQ, head to the War Room and speak to Mathiu. This will automatically trigger the recruitment of Kasumi (64/108).

You will then face an unwinnable War Battle, followed by a duel.

Duel 2: Pahn vs General Teo

In this duel, remember the basic mechanics:

  • Attack > Defend
  • Defend > Special
  • Special > Attack

Below is a reference based on a classic Duel Guide by Mikael Månsson. While some dialogue has been updated in the Remaster, this guide should give you a solid idea of Teo’s actions during the duel.

  • Teo will Attack:

    • My sword’s not rusty yet.
    • Pretty good, Pahn.
    • Is that all you’ve got? Now it’s my turn!
    • Do you see how we’re mismatched?
    • All you can do is defend, Pahn? No mercy!
    • We’re getting nowhere. Here I come!
    • Did you see me coming?
    • That was a good one, Pahn. Now it’s my turn.
    • Get serious, Pahn. This is how it’s done.
    • The numbness in my hands, it’s real.
  • Teo will Defend:

    • Strike me, Pahn!
    • All right, do it again!
    • I’ll see that coming next time!
    • Do you give up?
    • Come on, Pahn. See if you can kill me.
    • You’re a smart one, Pahn.
    • Good work, Pahn. I’ll have to be more careful.
    • I’m losing my cool. Better be careful.
    • What’s the matter, Pahn? How about another round?
    • You’re better than I thought.
  • Teo will use a Special Attack:

    • Finish me with a single blow!
    • Can you dodge my blade, Pahn?
    • My killer blade…
    • Hmmm. Here I come again!
    • The next one will be more painful.
    • If you don’t attack, I will!
    • Impossible! Take that!
    • Now that I’ve seen what you’ve got, I’ll show you what I can do.
    • That’s…no good.
    • Excellent, Pahn. You’re a real fighter. Here’s another!

Pahn’s Survival and the 108 Stars of Destiny

If you followed all the steps correctly, Pahn should survive the duel. If Pahn dies, you will be unable to recruit all 108 Stars of Destiny.

There was an issue reported by an RPG Site staff writer regarding a glitch in the PS5 version of the game, where Pahn could not win despite being at a high level with good equipment. I personally did not encounter this problem in the PC version, however.

Once the duel ends, you’ll be brought back to base. Go ahead and sleep in your room, then head to the War Room and talk to Flik.

Next Steps

  • Add Tai Ho to your party.
  • Head to the docks and speak with Gen and Kamandol to acquire a new ship.
  • To proceed, you’ll need to level Kirkis up to 35, so it might be a good idea to include him in your party for the time being.

Kirov

Next, navigate northwest on Toran Lake, slightly north of the Pirate’s Fortress, to reach Kirov. There’s new equipment here, so take the opportunity to upgrade your gear if necessary.

To recruit Sarah, you’ll need to complete a series of trades:

  1. Buy Sugar from the item shop.
  2. Speak with Sarah, who’s doing laundry in the town center—she’ll ask for Soap.
  3. Talk to a man outside the armor shop; he’ll give you Soap in exchange for Soy Sauce.
  4. Find another man near the Inn who will trade Soy Sauce for Salt.
  5. A woman in the southeastern part of town will exchange Salt for a Yardstick.
  6. Finally, talk to a man in the Inn, who will give you a Yardstick in return for Sugar.

Once you’ve completed these trades, you can recruit Sarah (65/108).

Next, visit the stew in both the center-left and center-right buildings. Afterward, speak to Lester in the southern mansion to recruit him (66/108).

If you head to the Inn and beat the record time in any of the match games, you can recruit Georges (67/108).

Kalekka

Next, travel north to Kalekka and pick up the following items:

  • Earth Rune Piece (in the southeastern house)
  • Old Book Vol. 8 (in the rundown bar)
  • Antique (Flower Painting) (in the northwestern house)

Be careful not to step on the flower buds and speak with Blackman to recruit him (68/108). You can also find the Sound Orb in the northeastern house.

Head back to Kirov and talk to Melodye in the southwest corner. Give her the Sound Orb to recruit her (69/108).

Secret Factory

Proceed north of Kalekka to the Secret Factory. After a scene, talk to Kesler (70/108) and Ledon to recruit them (71/108). Inside the building, you can find Kage in the northwest corner—spend 20,000 Potch to recruit him (72/108).

Make sure to grab the Window Set 0 from a chest, and then speak with Mose for another scene.

Kirov / Headquarters

Return to Kirov and enter the southern mansion. Talk to Kun To for a scene, and during the events, you will recruit Kun To (73/108), Mose (74/108), and Ronnie Bell (75/108).

Next, head back to your HQ dock. As you enter, you’ll see a scene where Tai Ho leaves the party and Tir returns to his room.

Finally, talk to Mathiu in the War Room to continue.

The Final Battle against Teo McDohl

Before the final duel, make sure to power up your Charge and use it every turn to ensure victory.

Duel 3: Tir vs Teo

In this final duel, remember the core mechanics:

  • Attack > Defend
  • Defend > Special
  • Special > Attack

The following list is based on a classic Duel Guide from Mikael Månsson. Some of the dialogue has been updated in the Remaster, but this guide should serve as a useful reference for understanding Teo’s actions during the duel.

  • Teo will Attack:

    • Here I come, my son.
    • Well done!
    • That was nothing. Now it’s my turn.
    • Do you see how much better I am?
    • Is defending youself all you can do? You’ll never win that way.
    • We’re getting nowhere. Here I come!
    • Did you see that coming?
    • That was pretty good. Now it’s my turn.
    • You’re soft…soft! This is how you attack!
    • The numbness in my hands, it’s real!
  • Teo will Defend:

    • Show me what you’ve learned.
    • Good, try it again!
    • I’ll see you coming next time!
    • Is that all you’ve got?
    • Come on! Show me what a man you’ve become.
    • Leader of the Liberation Army! No wonder you’re careful.
    • Well done! I must be more careful too.
    • I’m losing my cool. I must be more cautious!
    • I underestimated you! What’s wrong? Another round?
    • I mustn’t underestimate you.
  • Teo will use a Special Attack:

    • My sword is the Emperor’s sword. I’ll show no mercy!
    • Can you avoid my sword?
    • My deadly sword…
    • Hmmm. Here I come again!
    • The next one will be more painful.
    • If you don’t attack, I will!
    • Are you trying to surpass me?
    • Now that I’ve seen what you’ve got, I’ll show you what I can do.
    • That’s…no good.
    • I’m delighted, my son. You’re quite a warrior. But here’s another!

After all the scenes, Alen (76/108) and Grenseal (77/108) will join.

The Neclord Diversion

Headquarters

  • Speak to Lepant for a cutscene. You’ll automatically travel to Lorimar.
  • Viktor and Cleo will rejoin the party, and you can add three more characters of your choice. To recruit someone soon, add the blacksmiths: Mose, Maas, and Meese.
  • Leave Lorimar and re-enter. Speak with Kirke to recruit him (78/108).

Warrior’s Village

  • Head southwest to Warrior’s Village.
  • After the scene, check out the shops and buy Red Flower Seeds.
  • Save your game at the Inn. Talk to Marco north of the Inn, play his game, and win 5000 Potch. He will join your team (79/108).
  • If you have the three blacksmiths in your party, speak with Moose in the northeast building. He will join (80/108) and can sharpen weapons up to level 15, though it will be expensive. Use Gaspar to build up funds over time.
  • Converse with the NPCs from the earlier cutscene in the northern building. Speak to Zorak, then Tengaar, and finally Viktor, before exiting.
  • After more scenes, you will face Neclord in a battle that you must lose.
  • Once the battle ends, speak with Zorak again.

Recruitment

  • Level up Kirkis to level 35, add him to your party, and head to the Village of the Kobolds’ Inn. Speak with Rubi twice to recruit him (81/108). (The Kobold Village is north of the Elven Village.)
  • Warp to Garan. If you have 80 characters, speak with Quincy, and she will join your team (82/108).
  • Retrieve Red, Yellow, and Blue Flower Seeds from your storage.
  • Head to Qlon Temple, located west of Warrior’s Village.

Qlon Temple

  • Speak with Fukien, located directly north of you, and he will join your party (83/108).
  • Before entering the shrine cave, talk to Morgan inside the shrine to the northeast. He will join as long as your HQ has reached level 3 (84/108).
  • Check the bookshelf to the west for Old Book Vol. 3.
  • Enter the cave, but leave immediately. Talk to Zen nearby, give him the colored seeds, and he will join your team (85/108).

Cave of the Past

  • Level up to at least level 40 before entering this lengthy dungeon. Make sure you have enough inventory space.
  • Upon entering the cave, go up the first set of stairs. The dungeon is linear. Collect the following items in order:
    • Crimson Cape (second set of stairs, to the west)
    • Medicine, Flowing Orb (upper fork)
    • Headgear (lower fork)
    • Window Orb (secret path SW of Headgear)
    • Old Book Vol 2. (in room E of Headgear)
    • 5000 Potch
    • Escape Talisman
  • Enter the stairs beyond the Escape Talisman. Here, you can find Crowley in a secret room, but you can’t recruit him just yet.
  • Illustrated War Scroll (Eastern room NE of Crowley)
  • Medicine, Silverlet
  • Mega Medicine, DEX Rune Piece
  • Check the Celestial Sword for a scene.

The Dragon Knights

Headquarters

  • Speak to Mathiu to trigger a cutscene. Flik and Humphrey are required party members, so make sure their equipment is upgraded if needed.

Recruitment

  • This is a time-sensitive opportunity, so don’t miss it.
  • Head to Kalekka and talk to Leon in the southern house.
  • Go back to Mathiu and get Mathiu’s Letter.
  • Return to Leon, and he will join your party (94/108).

Dragon’s Den

  • Head northwest from Antei to reach the Dragon’s Den.
  • The guard will initially turn you away, so go back to Antei.
  • In Antei, speak to the nearby NPC for a scene.
  • Afterward, return to the Dragon’s Den, and you’ll be able to enter.
    • Goldlet
    • Old Book Vol. 5
    • Power Gloves
  • At the end of the dungeon, watch a scene. Afterward, head west to the Dragon Knights’ Fortress.

Dragon Knights’ Fortress

  • In the northeast section of the fortress, speak to Fuma, who will join your team (95/108).
  • Head inside the fortress and talk to Kreutz in the northwest. He will join your party (96/108).
  • Go upstairs for a scene. Afterward, open the chest for Window Set 2 and check the bookcase for Old Book Vol. 4.
  • Add Liukan to your party and return. No need to worry about his equipment.
  • After the scene, Milia will join your team (97/108). She will face a boss fight, so be sure to equip and strengthen her gear.
  • When you’re ready, interact with the red dragon in the Dragon Knights’ Fortress to travel to Seek Valley.

Seek Valley

  • This is another mostly linear dungeon.
    • Master’s Robe
    • At the three-way fork, head northwest for Sound Set 2. Then take the center fork (you’ll return to the right fork later).
    • Mega Medicine
    • Boss: Crystal Core (weak to Earth—Hellion is a good choice, but remember you need four party members for this section).
    • Cyclone Orb
    • Gold Collar
  • After the boss, watch a scene. Once done, return to the entrance and leave.

Dragon Knights’ Fortress

  • Back in the Dragon Knights’ Fortress, talk to Joshua on the second floor.
  • During the event with Futch, simply move south, approach the first withered plant, and watch the scene.
  • When you’re able, speak to Joshua again. He’ll join your team (98/108), alongside Futch (99/108).

Headquarters

  • When you return to HQ, you’ll see a scene between Kasumi and Krin.
  • Head to the 4th floor for another scene. Taggart will join your party (100/108).
  • Add Mose, Maas, Meese, and Moose to your party, and return to Seek Valley.
  • Take the first eastern fork to meet Mace, who will join your team. He’ll allow you to power up your weapons to the maximum level of 16 (101/108).

Finale

Headquarters

  • When you’re ready, sleep in McDohl’s room and then talk to Mathiu to begin the next war battle.

Taking the Northern Checkpoint

  • You outnumber the enemy by a large margin, so this battle should be straightforward.
  • Remember the following battle strategy: Magic > Charge, Charge > Bow, Bow > Magic.
  • After the battle, Griffith will join your team (102/108).

Headquarters

  • For the next section, Kasumi and Krin are essential. Be sure to upgrade their equipment, especially Kasumi’s weapon.
  • Don’t forget to pick up Old Book Vol. 7 at the Northern Checkpoint where you recruited Griffith.
  • Head north from the Northern Checkpoint to reach Moravia Castle.

Moravia Castle

  • To the right, you’ll find the Pink Paint. There’s also an NPC in the northeast where you can rest and save.
  • At this point, you can turn in all books and paints to Ivanov for the A Painter for the Ages achievement.
    • Taikyoku Tunic
    • After traveling a long, linear path through rooms, you’ll find Mega Medicine and Needle.
  • At the end of the castle, you’ll see a scene where Warren (103/108) and Kasim (104/108) will join your team, along with Viktor who will rejoin.
  • You’ll need to backtrack through the castle to collect the last chest, which contains the Mother Earth Orb.
  • You can also recruit Vincent here (105/108).
  • Leave Moravia Castle and head south to the Northern Checkpoint.
  • You’ll recruit Maximillian (106/108) and Sancho (107/108) during the scene here.

Headquarters

  • Ensure there is only one empty space on the stone.
  • When you’re ready, talk to Mathiu in the War Room.

Floating Fortress War Battle

  • Use Ninjas to scout the enemy’s moves.
  • When you run out of Ninjas, use Thieves.
  • Power up your Charge attacks when possible.
  • Battle strategy: Magic > Charge, Charge > Bow, Bow > Magic.

Shasarazade

  • Another mostly linear dungeon.
    • Chaos Shield
    • Guard Ring
    • Master’s Garb
    • Mega Medicine (located at the left at the T-intersection)
  • Boss: Shell Venus - Weak to Lightning and Earth.
    • Thunder Orb
  • After the boss, return for another boss fight.
    • Boss: Sonya.

Headquarters

  • Before doing anything else, head to the basement of the HQ and talk to Sonya.
  • Choose “I want you to join us” and then “It doesn’t matter.” Sonya will join your party (108/108).
  • This is your last opportunity to recruit additional characters.
  • Afterward, talk to Mathiu in the War Room for a long scene. The content of the scene will vary depending on whether you have recruited all 108 Stars or less.
  • Once done, speak to Mathiu again to initiate the next war battle.

War Battle: The Last Battle

  • Use Ninjas to scout the enemy’s moves.
  • Use Thieves when Ninjas are unavailable.

Gregminster

  • For the final section of the game, Flik and Viktor are required.
  • Check the shops for the best items available in the game.
  • It’s a good idea to have two offensive magic casters and a third one with a Flowing Rune.
  • This is your last chance to prepare for Suikoden 2.
    • Equip Windspun Armor on Humphrey.
    • The following characters are playable in Suikoden 2. If you max out their weapons (level 16) in Suikoden 1, they will start with a +3 weapon bonus in the sequel:
      • Clive
      • Flik
      • Futch
      • Hix
      • Humphrey
      • Kasumi
      • Lorelai

      • Sheena
      • Stallion
      • Tengaar
      • Valeria
      • Viktor
  • When you’re ready, enter Gregminster Palace.

Gregminster Palace

  • Boss: Ain Gide - This is a relatively easy boss.
  • The dungeon is straightforward but filled with forced battles. These battles do not respawn, so feel free to leave and heal up when needed.
    • Windspun Armor (equip this on Humphrey!)
    • Horned Helmet
    • Power Ring
  • When you see a save point, you know you’re nearing the final boss. This is the last save point in the game.
  • In the Remaster, you will create a clear save that can be used to import your progress into Suikoden 2 after finishing the game. You don’t need to save at this specific point like in the original Suikoden.

Final Boss Strategy

  • For the final boss, defeat the head on the left side first, as it can heal itself.
  • After that, use your best strategies to finish the battle.
